Sansevieria (family Agavaceae) A genus of perennial herbs, including S. zeylanica which yields bowstring hemp and S. trifasciata (mother-in-law's tongue), a popular house plant with dark green, blotched, strap-like, erect leaves. There are 12 species, found in Arabia, Africa, and Madagascar.
