Sanne (Jap., ‘three robes’). The three robes used by a Japanese Buddhist monk: (i) sōgyari, made of nine to twenty-five pieces of cloth, worn for appearance in public, e.g. for begging; (ii) uttarasō, made of seven pieces and worn at ceremonies, lectures, etc.; (iii) andae, for ordinary use.
