Metroxylon (sago palms; family Palmae) A genus of big palms, most of which form a huge, tree-like, terminal inflorescence and die after fruiting. Some are clump-forming. The leaves are pinnate, and weakly spiny. They are monoecious. The flowers are held in spikes subtended by bracts, comprising a male, plus a female or hermaphrodite. The fruits are scaly. The endosperm is hard, a vegetable ivory. There are 8 species, occurring from the Moluccas east to the Carolines and Fiji.
