The fragrant flowers have a bell-like, persistent calyx, 5 free, imbricate petals, 10–12 free stamens, anthers with apical pores; and a superior, 3-celled ovary. The fruit is a capsule. There is 1 genus, with 64 species, occurring in tropical to warm temperate America, eastern Asia, and Madeira.
