chenier plain An area of marine aggradation consisting of sandy ridges (cheniers) separated by clay-rich depressions. Occasionally the ridges may be vegetated, as on the Gulf Coast of the USA. Chenier plains may be large: that on the north coast of South America is about 2250 km long and up to 30 km wide.
