Chamaedorea (family Palmae) A genus of palms most of which are small, delicate, shade-loving palms of forest undergrowth. Many are clump-forming. The stems are slender, hoop- marked, and erect, or rarely climbing. The leaves are small, pinnate, or simple. The plants are dioecious. Several are in cultivation as house plants. There are about 110 species, occurring in Central and S. America, and around the Caribbean.
