WERENFRID, ST.

Anglo-Saxon missionary in the Netherlands; d. Westervoort, near Arnhem, Netherlands, c. 726. He was a Northumbrian, one of the companions of SS. willibrord and swithbert. He preached to the pagan Frisians in Holland and Gelderland. He seems to have made one journey to France, and then returned to die in the mission field. He was venerated particularly at Elst in Gelderland, where he was buried. Since 1664 his relics have been at the Jesuit church in Emmerich, Germany.

Feast: Aug. 14 or 27.
