Werner Gregor Joseph
Werner Gregor Joseph Austrian organist and composer; b. Ybbs an der Donau, Jan. 28, 1693; d. Eisenstadt, Burgenland, March 3, 1766. In 1728 he was appointed Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy at Eisen-stadt. In 1761 Haydn was named Vice-Kapellmeister, and succeeded him after his death. Werner wrote a number of works, including 26 masses, 18 oratorios, and many instrumental pieces. Haydn had great respect for him, and arranged his fugues for string quartet.
