GVATI, CHAIM

GVATI, CHAIM (1901–1990), Israeli pioneer and politician. Chaim Gvati was born in Poland and immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1924. One of the founders of kibbutz Gevat in 1926, he later helped found kibbutz Yifat where he remained. Gvati was minister of agriculture from 1964 to 1974 in Labor governments. In 1982 he was awarded the Israel Prize for his contribution to the development of the state as a ḥalutz ("pioneer") and for his role in the establishment and development of agricultural settlements.
