ARRIAN ° (Flavius Arrianus ; c. 96–c. 180 c.e.), Greek soldier, historian, and philosopher. Arrian is best known for his Anabasis, a history of Alexander the Great from his accession until his death, and Parthica, a history of the Parthians, of which only fragments have survived. In the former, Arrian recounts Alexander's capture of Gaza, though he is silent about Judea. On the other hand, in his Parthica (fragment 79), Arrian seems to have described in detail the suppression of the Jewish revolt in Mesopotamia in 116 c.e.
