In Advaita Vedānta viveka is considered one of the four requisites of a seeker after knowledge of Brahman and is defined by Śaṅkara as: ‘an (intellectual) discrimination between what is eternal and what is noneternal’ (Brahmasūtrabhāṣya 1. 1).
