Tōji. A temple in Kyōto, built in 796 by the emperor Kanmu when the capital was relocated there. In c.830, it was given to Kūkai to serve as the centre of Shingon, after which it was called Konkōmyō-shitennō-kyōō-gokokuji, or Kyōō-gokokuji for short. The beautiful five-storey pagoda was reconstructed in the 17th cent.
