Nufio, José Dolores (?–?)

José Dolores Nufio, one of the principal leaders of the 1848 montaña revolt of the Lucíos in Guatemala. As military commander of Chiquimula, Nufio's defection to the liberals at the end of July 1848 was important in bringing about Carrera's resignation on 15 August. Nufio promised to place his forces under the orders of the new assembly but separated himself from Guatemalan authority until that body covened, allying himself with rebels in Los Altos. Nufio then seized Izabal, where his control of the port and customs house made Carrera's position untenable.

Following Carrera's departure, however, the liberal assembly failed to meet the demands of Nufio and other rebel commanders, who in turn refused to submit to the new government and continued the revolt. This division among the liberals helped Carrera eventually to return in 1849. In collaboration with José Francisco Barrundia, Gerardo Barrios, and Trinidad Cabañas, Nufio joined forces with liberals in Los Altos, El Salvador, and Honduras. His "National Army" raided and attacked Guatemala from sanctuaries in El Salvador and Honduras through 1850. These activities eventually led to a showdown at San José la Arada, Guatemala, on 2 February 1851, where Carrera dealt the liberal allies a stunning defeat, thus assuring the security of conservative rule in Guatemala.
