Auldearn, battle of, 1645. Montrose was unable to follow up his great victory at Inverlochy in February 1645 when many of his followers returned home. The campaign resumed the pattern of march and counter-march. This time a covenanting army under Sir John Hurry tried to surprise Montrose on 9 May at Auldearn, east of Nairn. The issue was decided by a spirited cavalry counter-attack by the Gordons and Hurry fled to Inverness.
