Augustus De Morgan
Augustus De Morgan
1806-1871
English mathematician whose work in logic helped spur the development of mathematical logic as a separate discipline. He was instrumental in making mathematics a profession in England and in taking it out of the narrow confines of the traditional universities of Oxford and Cambridge. A man of principle and great learning, he ensured that mathematics was part of the training for students planning to pursue technical careers.
