bifidus factor A carbohydrate in human milk which contains nitrogen and stimulates the growth of Lactobacillus bifidus in the intestine. In turn, this organism lowers the pH of the intestinal contents and suppresses the growth of E. coli and other pathogenic bacteria. See also prebiotics.
