Browser Litigation
BROWSER LITIGATION
In January of 2002 Netscape Communications, owned by AOL Time Warner, filed suit against Microsoft, which produces Internet Explorer (IE). Netscape alleged that Microsoft engaged in illegal activities (e.g., unfair competition practices) to gain the vast share of the browser market. Once the most-used browser, Netscape claimed that Microsoft violated anti-trust laws when it made IE an integral part of its Windows operating system. According to USA Today, some 92 percent of personal computers run Microsoft's Windows operating system as of 2002.
