SIDELIGHTS: A Choice critic called Jennifer McCabe Atkinson's compilation "Children of the Sea" and Three Other Unpublished Plays by Eugene O'Neill "an important addition to the early record of O'Neill's work." L. E. Bone, writing in Library Journal, noted that the quality of the playwright's craft early in his career may explain why these plays stayed hidden for as long as they did. "There is clearly an amateurish quality to [O'Neill's] writing, each play being little more than melodrama," Bone wrote. Atkinson also released Eugene O'Neill: A Descriptive Bibliography, which describes each of her subject's productions from 1931 through the eight plays published after O'Neill's death in 1953.
