Wit, Antoni

Wit, Antoni, Polish conductor; b. Krakow, Feb. 7, 1944. He was educated in his native city, taking courses in conducting at the State Coll. of Music (graduated, 1967) and in law at the Jagiellonian Univ. (graduated, 1969). He won 2nd prize in the Karajan Competition in Berlin (1971) and completed his conducting studies at the Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood (summer, 1973). He was asst. conductor of the National Phil. in Warsaw (1967-70), then conducted the Poznan State Phil. (1970-72) and the Pomeranian Phil. in Bydgoszcz (1974-77). After serving as artistic director of the Polish Radio and Television Sym. Orch. in Krakow (1977-83), he held that title with the Polish Radio and Television National Sym. Orch. in Katowice (from 1983); also toured widely as a guest conductor.
