Stuart, Leslie [ Thomas Augustine Barrett] (b Southport, 1864; d Richmond, Surrey, 1928). Eng. composer and organist. Org., Salford Cath. 1879–86, and Church of the Holy Name, Manchester, 1886–93. Went to London 1895 where he became composer of such popular songs as Soldiers of the Queen (1895), Little Dolly Daydream (1897), Lily of Laguna (1898) (the last two being made famous by the Amer. ‘coon’ singer Eugene Stratton), and operettas Florodora (1899) (which contains the sextet ‘Tell me, pretty maiden’), The Belles of Mayfair (1906), etc.
