scala enigmatica (Lat.). Enigmatic scale. Term applied to arbitrary scale used by Verdi in his Ave Maria (1897), the first of his Quattro pezzi sacri. Scale, which sounds like whole-tone scale, is C–D♭–E–F♯–G♯–A♯–B–C.
