Rosbaud, Hans

Rosbaud, Hans , eminent Austrian conductor; b. Graz, July 22, 1895; d. Lugano, Dec. 29, 1962. He studied at the Hoch Cons. in Frankfurt am Main. He was director of the Hochschule für Musik in Mainz (1921–30); also conducted the City Orch. there; served as 1st Kapellmeister of the Frankfurt am Main Radio and of the Museumgesellschaft concerts (1928–37); then was Generalmusikdirektor in Munster (1937–41) and in Strasbourg (1941–44); subsequently was appointed Generalmusikdirektor of the Munich Phil. (1945). In 1948 he became chief conductor of the Sym. Orch. of the Southwest Radio in Baden–Baden, and in 1957, music director of the Tonhalle Orch. in Zürich. He particularly distinguished himself as a conductor of modern works. He conducted the first performance of Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron (concert perf., Hamburg, 1954); also conducted its first stage performance (Zürich, 1957).
