Pauer, Max von, eminent Austrian pianist and teacher, son of Ernst Pauer; b. London, Oct. 31,1866; d. Jugenheim, May 12, 1945. He studied with his father and with V. Lachner, and then embarked on several successful concert tours in Germany. In 1887 he was appointed prof, of piano at the Cologne Cons., and in 1897 he became a prof, at the Stuttgart Cons.; was its director from 1908 to 1920; in 1920 it became the Hochschule für Musik, which he directed until 1924. He then he was director of the Leipzig Cons. (1924–32) and of the Mannheim Hochschule für Musik (1933–34). He made an American tour in 1913–14. Following his father’s excellent example in arranging Classical syms. for piano, he made transcriptions of syms. by Mozart and Haydn for piano solo and piano, 4-hands. He publ, an ironic autobiography, Unser seltsames Ich: Lebensschau eines Künstlers
