Katwijk, Paul van

Katwijk, Paul van, Dutch-American pianist, conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Delfshaters, Dec. 7, 1885; d. Dallas, Dec. 11, 1974. He studied at The Hague Cons., then in Berlin with Klatte and in Vienna with Godowsky. In 1912 he settled in the U.S., where he taught at Drake Univ. in Des Moines (1914–18) and also conducted the Des Moines Sym. Orch. In 1918 he was appointed dean of music at Southern Methodist Univ. in Dallas. He resigned in 1949, but continued to teach piano there until 1955. He was conductor of the Dallas Municipal Opera (1922–25) and the Dallas Sym. Orch. (1925–36). He composed several symphonic works, including the suite Hollandia (Dallas, March 15, 1931).
