Hughes, Edwin

Hughes, Edwin, American pianist and teacher; b. Washington, D.C., Aug. 15, 1884; d. N.Y., July 17, 1965. He studied with S. M. Fabian in Washington, D.C., with Joseffy in N.Y. (1906–07), and with Leschetizky in Vienna (1907–10). He taught at the Ganapol School of Musical Art in Detroit (1910–12), the Volpe Inst, of Music in N.Y. (1916–17), and the Inst. of Musical Art in N.Y. (1918–23); lectured at various schools. From 1920 to 1926 he was special ed. of piano music for G. Schirmer, Inc. He toured widely in the U.S. and Europe after the close of World War I. He performed duo- recitals with his wife, the pianist Jewel Bethany Hughes, and also gave master classes.
