Holter, Iver (Paul Fredrik)

Holter, Iver (Paul Fredrik), Norwegian conductor and composer; b. Gausdal, Dec. 13, 1850; d. Oslo, Jan. 25, 1941. He entered the Univ. of Christiania as a student of medicine, but devoted much more time to music, which he studied under Svendsen. He then was a pupil of Jadassohn, Richter, and Reinecke at the Leipzig Cons. (1876–78). He became Grieg’s successor as conductor of the Harmonien in Bergen (1882). From 1886 to 1911 he was conductor of the Musikföreningen in Christiania, and from 1890 to 1905, of the Handvaerk-ersangföreningen. In 1907 he founded and until 1921 conducted Holters Korförening. In 1919 the Norwegian government granted him an artist’s stipend. He was ed. of the Nor disk Musik Revue (1900–06). His compositions include a Sym. (1885), a Violin Concerto, chamber music, several cantatas, as for the 300-year jubilee of Christiania (1924) and for the 900-year Olavs-jubilee (1930), choruses, and songs.
