Handt, Herbert

Handt, Herbert, American tenor and conductor; b. Philadelphia, May 26, 1926. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. and the Vienna Academy of Music, making his operatic debut at the Vienna State Opera (1949). After making his conducting debut in Rome (1960), he prepared performing eds. of rarely heard Italian scores; he later settled in Lucca, where he was founder-director of the Associazione Musicale Lucchese, the Lucca Chamber Orch., and the Marlia International Festival.
