Burgmüller, (August Joseph) Norbert (b Düsseldorf, 1810; d Aachen, 1836). Ger. composer and pianist. Son of J. A. F. Burgmüller and brother of J. F. Burgmüller. Showed extreme gifts as child. Lived in poverty owing to unwillingness to pursue professional career, but was much admired by circle of artistic friends incl. Mendelssohn and Schumann. His Rhapsody in B minor for pf. and his str. qt. in A minor have been likened to Schubert. Also wrote sym. (another unfinished), pf. conc., and pf. sonatas.
