Prisoner of Paradise
Prisoner of Paradise ★★★ 2002
Stark PBS documentary profiling German singer/actor/director Kurt Gerron who gained fame during the 1920s and 1930s in “The Blue Angel,” but, as a Jew, was not allowed to work with the Nazis in power and oddly declined a chance to escape. After being captured while touring with gypsies and sent to a camp, the Nazis forced him to create a proNazi film, “The Fuhrer Gives a City to the Jews.” His 23minute work is curiously omitted. 96m/C DVD. D: Malcolm Clarke, Stuart Sender; W: Malcolm Clarke, Ian Holm. TV
