My Foolish Heart ★★½ 1949

Women's weepie starred Hayward as Eloise Winters, the tippling and unhappily married wife of Lew Wengler (Smith). Eloise stole Lew away from her college roommate, Mary Jane (Wheeler), when she got pregnant by another man. Lew has asked Eloise for a divorce so he and Mary Jane can finally get hitched. But an old evening dress has Eloise remembering her true love and the father of her daughter—Walt Dreiser (Andrews)— whom she fatefully met in 1941. Eloise finally owns up to the unhappiness her deception has caused and at least someone is happy by the closing credits. Based on the short story “Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut” by J.D.
