In the Land of Women ★★ 2006 (PG-13)

Sensitive 26yearold aspiring screenwriter Carter Webb (Brody) escapes a failed relationship and a nowhere career in L.A. to visit his grouchy ailing grandma, Phyllis (Dukakis), in Michigan. Carter then becomes involved in the lives of neighbors Sarah (Ryan) and Lucy (Stewart) Hardwicke. Sarah's just been diagnosed with breast cancer and has a troubled marriage, while 16-year-old Lucy is acting like an obnoxious brat. Carter becomes the confidante of each, which leads to some emotional fireworks, although the pic is so low-key and familiar it's hard to get involved. Kasdan, making his feature debut, is the son of director Lawrence and younger brother of director Jake. 97m/C DVD . US Adam Brody, Kristen Stewart, Meg Ryan, Olympia Dukakis, Makenzie Vega, Elena Anaya, Gregg Henry, JoBeth Williams, Dustin Milligan, Ginnifer Goodwin, Clark Gregg, Gina Mantegna; D: Jonathan Kasdan; W: Jonathan Kasdan; C: Paul Cameron; M: Stephen Trask.
