Bright Lights, Big City ★★ 1988 (R)

Based on Jay McInerney's popular novel, Fox plays a contemporary yuppie working in Manhattan as a magazine journalist. As his world begins to fall apart, he embarks on an endless cycle of drugs and nightlife. Fox is poorly cast, and his character is hard to care for as he becomes more and more dissolute. Although McInerney wrote his own screenplay, the intellectual abstractness of the novel can't be captured on film. 110m/C VHS, DVD . David Warrilow, Sam Robards, Kelly Lynch, Annabelle Gurwitch, Maria Pitillo, David Hyde Pierce, Jessica Lundy, Michael J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland, Phoebe Cates, Frances Sternhagen, Swoosie Kurtz, Tracy Pollan, Jason Robards Jr., John Houseman, Dianne Wiest, Charlie Schlatter, William Hickey; D: James Bridges; C: Gordon Willis.
