Hatzimichali, Angeliki (1895–1956)

Greek writer and folklorist. Born in Greece, in 1895; died in 1956; daughter of a professor of Greek literature.

The daughter of a professor of Greek literature, Angeliki Hatzimichali devoted her life to the study and preservation of traditional Greek culture, both Byzantine and modern folk. Living much of her life among the peasants in the countryside, Hatzimichali painstakingly observed and recorded daily life, customs, and handicraft techniques. She was instrumental in the establishment of professional schools for the preservation of traditional crafts as well as workshops where immigrant women from Asia Minor could also practice their native crafts. Hatzimichali's writings on folk arts and crafts were widely published in folk-art journals in Greece and abroad, and in 1921, she organized the first exhibit of folk art in Greece.
