Nissen, Erika (1845–1903)

Norwegian pianist who performed many of Edvard Grieg's works, often with the composer as conductor. Born in Kongsvinger, Norway, in 1845; died in 1903; children: Karl Nissen (1879–1920), the composer.

Erika Nissen studied first with her sister and then in Berlin and Paris. She gave recitals in London and eventually throughout Europe. Returning to Norway, she became a popular teacher in Oslo. Specializing in contemporary Scandinavian music, Nissen gave the premiere performances of Christian Sinding's Piano Quintet in 1888 and his Piano Concerto (which is dedicated to her) in 1890. She performed Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto on many occasions with the composer conducting. Grieg dedicated the piano version of his Holberg Suite to her. She was the first teacher of her son Karl Nissen, who had a successful career.
