Served as federal secretary, Loire Republican Party (1984–94); was deputy mayor of Saint Etienne; member of the policy bureau and national secretary for equal opportunities, Démocratie libérale (DL), and national vice-chair of the DL party; as a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, elected to 4th and 5th European Parliament (1994–99, 1999–2004).
