American marathon runner. Born 1952 in New Orleans, Louisiana; died of injuries in Texas, Oct 1998, when hit by a truck while riding her bike.
Was the 1st woman to win the NYC Marathon (1971) with a time of 2:55:22, becoming arguably the 1st woman to break 3:00 (Adrienne Beames of Australia broke 3:00 earlier but the conditions were suspect); won US National championships in the 3,000 meters (1970).
