Antrim, Angela (1911–1984)

Irish artist. Name variations: Countess of Antrim. Born Angela Sykes in 1911; died in 1984; educated privately; studied in Belgium under sculptor D'Havlosse; attended British School in Rome; married the 8th earl of Antrim.

Known for her large scale stone sculptures, Lady Angela Antrim was educated privately and studied in Belgium under the sculptor D'Havlosse, before attending the British School in Rome. Her early work was done out of a studio in London. After the outbreak of World War II, she and her husband, the 8th earl of Antrim, moved to Glenarm Castle in County Antrim, where she lived until her death in 1984. Her work included a number of public commissions in stone, including those at St. Joseph's Church, Ballygally, County Antrim, and at the parliament buildings, Newfoundland. She exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. After an injury to her hand put an end to her sculpting in 1962, Antrim turned to working mostly with models cast in bronze.
