mass hysteria A psycho-social phenomenon whereby people in large groups behave in a similar and often emotional manner. Often used (somewhat ethnocentrically) in trans-cultural psychiatry, together with the term collective epidemics, in reference to the pressure to conform to group norms in the societies of the Third World.
