Luigi Amedeo Abruzzi
1873-1933
Spanish mountaineer and explorer whose travels ranged from Africa to the Arctic. Abruzzi was the first to ascend Mt. St. Elias in Alaska (1897). His 1899 expedition to the arctic reached latitude 86° 34' N—a record for the time. In east-central Africa his expedition studied and named the geologic, topographic, and glaciers of the Ruwenzori Range. In 1909 he climbed the world's second highest mountain, K2, in the Himalayas.
