Italian archaeologist known for his work researching the early Bronze Age cultures of Crete. In 1900 Pernier led a team of Italian archaeologists that conducted excavations at the palace of Phaistos (3000-1100 b.c.) and uncovered the Phaistos Disc. The meaning of the terracotta disc, marked with some 45 different pictograms, has been debated since its discovery.
