nurse tree
nurse tree A fast-growing tree (e.g. birch or pine), which is planted at the same time as a slower-growing and ultimately more valuable tree (e.g. oak). By growing faster, the nurse tree shelters and protects the other seedling while it is young and is removed when the young tree is established.
