Le Pichon, Xavier (1937– ) A French marine geologist from the Brittany Oceanographic Centre at Brest, who worked in the USA in the late 1960s, Le Pichon studied the mechanisms of sea-floor spreading. He worked out the geometry of plate movements on a sphere, and was the first to recognize that there are six major tectonic plates.
