Le Roy, René

Le Roy, René, French flutist and teacher; b. Maisons-Lafitte, near Paris, March 4, 1898; d. Paris, Jan. 3, 1985. He studied at the Paris Cons, with Hennebains, Lafleurance, and Gaubert, and in 1918 won the premier prix for flute. In 1919 he succeeded Gaubert as director of the Société des Instruments à Vent. In 1922 he founded the Quintette Instrumental de Paris, with which he gave numerous concerts in Europe and America. He subsequently occupied various teaching positions; was prof, of chamber music for wind instruments at the Paris Cons. (1955–64). He compiled (with C. Dorgeuille) the manual Traité de la flûte, historique, technique et pédagogique (Paris, 1966).
