Hordeum (barley; family Gramineae) A genus of grasses that were domesticated in very ancient times (they were grown in ancient Egypt) and that are used today mainly as livestock feed and for malting to make beer and whisky. H. vulgare is the most widely cultivated of about 20 species, native to the eastern Mediterranean region and cultivated in temperate regions throughout the world.
