HASSID, WILLIAM ZEV

HASSID, WILLIAM ZEV (1897–1974), U.S. biochemist. Born in Jaffa, Hassid served in the British Army in World War i, then went to the U.S. in 1920. He became professor of plant biochemistry at Berkeley, California, 1950, and of biochemistry, 1959. His field of research was in structural carbohydrate chemistry and on carbohydrate metabolism in plants. He was the chairman of the Carbohydrate Division of the American Chemical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
