Armando Diaz (ärmän´dō dē´äts), 1861–1928, Italian field marshal. In World War I he replaced (1917) Cadorna as chief Italian commander. He defeated (1918) the disintegrating Austro-Hungarian army at Vittorio Veneto and concluded (Nov. 3) the armistice, based on unconditional surrender, with Austria-Hungary. Created duca della Vittoria [duke of victory], he was later minister of war (1922–24).
