Díaz Vélez, José Miguel (1770–1833)

José Miguel Díaz Vélez (b. 1770; d. 1833), Argentine patriot. Born in Tucumán and trained as a lawyer, Díaz Vélez was military commandant of Entre Ríos province from 1810 to 1814. He later held various positions in Buenos Aires. In 1825 he was a member of a mission to Upper Peru that sought a treaty with Simón Bolívar concerning the future status of that region and collaboration in a possible war against Brazil. The mission was a failure, as Upper Peru was by then committed to becoming a separate nation-state and Bolívar proved ambivalent regarding an anti-Brazilian alliance. Díaz Vélez served in the Unitarist regime set up in Buenos Aires by Juan Lavalle in 1828; when it collapsed, he emigrated to Uruguay, where he died at Paysandú.
