Sánchez, Cuco (1921–2000)

Refugio "Cuco" Sánchez was a popular and prolific Mexican songwriter as well as a singer and actor. One of his most famous songs is "Mi Chata" (My sweetheart), which he composed at the age of eight. Born in Altamira, Tamaulipas, on May 3, 1921, he went to Mexico City as a young man and began a career as a singer-songwriter and actor, appearing in many movies during the 1950s and 1960s. Sánchez's famous bolero "Fallaste Corazón" (Broken heart), first released in 1954, continues to be performed and recorded by Mexican and Latino singers. Several of his rancheras were also popular hits of the 1950s. In the 1960s Sánchez continued to have success with several songs, including his original and famous composition of 1964, "Anillo de Compromiso" (Engagement ring). His last year as a composer was 1970, with "Arbol Seco" (Dry tree), "La Herfanita" (The little orphan), "Me Desgracié" (I'm disgraced), and "Nuestro Gran Amor" (Our great love). He appeared in several TV shows from the 1970s through the 1990s. In addition to his status as a beloved performer, Sánchez is the Mexican composer with the greatest number of songs used in cinema. He died in Mexico City on October 5, 2000.
