Democratic Union (UD)

Formed in 1945, the Democratic Union of Argentina was a superficially united and diverse front of old-line political parties and interest groups opposed to the presidential candidacy of Juan Domingo Perón. Radicals José P. Tamborini and Enrique N. Mosca headed their ticket in elections scheduled for February 1946. The front's campaign, with its dated slogan, "For Liberty and Against Nazi-Fascism," failed to address the issues that concerned most of the electorate. Moreover, the UD was tainted because of links both to Moscow-oriented Communists and to the U.S. government. Perón won with 52.4 percent of the vote; the UD garnered 42.5 percent.
