Chucuito

Chucuito, a province in the department of Puno, Peru. Juli is its capital. Bordered by Lake Titicaca to the east and Bolivia to the south, the province's elevations range from 12,500 to 13,200 feet. The region was an important center of pre-Hispanic cultures. The published official inquiry (visita) by Garci Diez de San Miguel in 1567 describes in great detail the Lupaca people of the region, thus constituting a crucial source on the precolonial and early Conquest periods. Commerce with Bolivia and livestock raising are the province's major economic activities today.
